For those who are interested in shifting or moving to Canada, the IELTS examination is a compulsory test that they need to clear before forwarding their application to the immigration office. The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is one of the most used tests that are used by various universities worldwide for evaluating students wishing to study abroad. It helps to ensure the language proficiency of the aspirant. The better your score, means you deeply understand the language. The proficiency is calculated with the help of bands ranging from 1 to 9. 1 being the lowest and 9 being the highest.
This is a compulsory test for those who want to shift to Canada. They may be a student or a professional, or even going with the family or through the investment visa or spouse visa, everyone has to pass through the language proficiency test.
The students and the professionals require to pass the test through high bands more than 6.5 as they have to use the language professionally and academically while others may relax as they are not using the language professionally, but still they should be good enough to communicate in their day to day life. So that they can easily stay in the country and understand the language and also communicate their own thoughts. So that the other person is not clueless and they can survive properly.
The IELTS examination has four modules, it consists of reading, listening, writing, and speaking. Reading, writing and listening are conducted through the examination center whereas Speaking is conducted through a one on one session. Here the examiner is sitting right in front of the applicant and trying to strike a suitable conversation with the aspirant. There is a proper IELTS Speaking Format beginning with the introduction of the candidate, followed by a Cue Card topic, here a topic is suggested to the candidate and they have to speak on the same for two minutes and then followed by a question answer session related to the same topic.
Generally, of all the categories students often find the test for the speaking module difficult to attempt as the IELTS Speaking format is through interviews. It is not impossible to score well on your speaking test. It can be very difficult to respond quickly and students are easily scared by it.
They find it very difficult as well as confusing so what to do? Speaking can be tricky, the examiner is continuously judging, asking and looking at the confidence. Well, there is no way to skip it, the best is to face it. Yes! Be prepared and face it with all your preparation and skills.
We bring some of these simple tips to ensure a good score in your exam!
Be confident
Confidence is the key. No matter what is going inside you, you need to pose yourself to be confident.
- Do not be too afraid of the test or your interviewer. The consciousness may cause you to get nervous and cause you to fumble while answering. Maintain your cool.
- Think of the test like any other test you have given before and don’t get extra cautious just because the test is in interview format. Just relax and go by a merry conversation. Add a smile when required.
- Speak in one go, as pausing in the sentences might reflect that you have trouble forming sentences in English. Also, it states that you are not clear about your thoughts.
Don’t be afraid to speak
Think this test as a pleasant conversation and feel free to speak what you like.
- Do not try to use firm views that might not be the best idea for any exam, you should be free to express any views you have within the ambit of the question.
- Remember, the interviewer is not there to judge you on your views, it is just the command of the language.
- Being apprehensive about speaking something you like might cause you to look for words while speaking which might leave a bad impression on the interviewer. Try to be light and open minded. Do not restrict yourself.
Practice beforehand
Practice very well, before appearing in an examination. There is no shortcut for it.
- No test can be given without preparing for it; similarly, you need to prepare for the speaking test by conducting mock interviews with your teachers or someone more experienced in English than you.
- You can also read out aloud to learn the correct usage of words and how to pronounce them.
- While using too many words might not work in your favour, don’t be afraid to learn new words before your test and use them to score well. Speak those words that you know well.
- There is a Big ‘NO’ to the fake accent. Speak through your normal tone and pitch.
